Odd Weather! 1816: The Year Without a Summer
August 26, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The odd weather events of 1816 provide a fascinating glimpse into the effects of dramatic temperature swings on food production and corresponding human health and wellness around the world. In this program, we’ll explore what caused winter to persist deep into summer of 1816 in North America and take a deeper look at the aftermath and related cultural phenomena in the arts and sciences.
Today’s scientists attribute much of the extreme weather of 1816 to the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia – but what have we learned since then? Could the “winter of 1816” be repeated in the 21st century? Join naturalist/Executive Director Jessica Bierbrauer to learn more at this free program.
