Pepin is Laura Ingalls Wilder country. The renowned author of the immensely popular “Little House” series of books was born on a farm near Pepin in 1867. The Little House Wayside, seven miles northwest of Pepin on County Road CC, marks the author´s birthplace with a replica of the log cabin Wilder describes in “Little House in the Big Woods.” It is open year-round. The three-acre site is a fine spot for a picnic or to read a chapter from a Wilder classic.
The Pepin Village Park features a Laura Ingalls Wilder memorial, the Pepin Depot Museum, and the Pepin Historical Museum, which focuses on local history and the Wilder legacy. The Pepin Tourist Information Center is located next to the museum and is open daily from May through October.
Pepin also has a marina, a municipal swimming beach and a courtesy dock. The waterfront is a wonderful spot to watch the boats navigating the Mississippi River.
