Stockholm sits on the shores of Lake Pepin. As its name suggests, the village of Stockholm has Swedish roots. The first settler to arrive in Stockholm was a Swedish man named Erik Peterson, who convinced a number of his family and fellow countrymen to join him there on the banks of the Mississippi. The Stockholm Museum has information about the community’s origins.

Some of the Mississippi River Valley’s first French explorers settled here. Just south of Stockholm, the remains of what some believe to be Fort St. Antoine were found, which was established by Nicholas Perrot in 1686.

Stockholm is home to many artists and craftsmen, which is reflected in the community’s businesses, including more than 20 shops, galleries, restaurants, guest houses, inns and B&B’s. A great place for views of the river and bluffs is Village Park, on the shores of Lake Pepin.
