DeSoto is named for the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto, the first European to see the Mississippi River in 1541.
De Soto is home to Black Hawk Park, open year-round and located just north of De Soto. During the Black Hawk War of 1832, heavy fighting took place between here and the mouth of the Bad Axe River. Today, park offers riverfront campsites, picnic areas, a fishing dock, a sand swimming beach and a boat launch.
