The small community of Trempealeau has a Main Street that runs right down to the Mississippi River. The most famous of all of Trempealeau’s historic buildings is the Trempealeau Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Place and a popular restaurant and lodging establishment.
South of Trempealeau, you’ll find Lock and Dam #6, a great place to view riverboat traffic making its way through the locks. There is a marina here and anglers will find a fishing barge located below the dam.
North of Trempealeau, on the Wisconsin Great River Road, is Perrot State Park. The fourteen hundred acre Perrot State Park encompasses a complex of wetlands and towering bluffs. The park’s most scenic feature is Trempealeau Mountain, for which the community was named. This majestic bluff is located entirely on an island surrounded by the Mississippi River. Exceptional hiking and biking trails throughout the park allow you to capture a number of fantastic views of this strikingly beautiful section of the river valley. An easy-to-paddle canoe trail is excellent for paddlers of all ability levels.
Perrot State Park also has several ancient burial mounds that can be seen along the trails. Campsites and boat launches are available, as well as access to the Great River State Trail. Canoe rentals are also available.
Also north of Trempealeau is the Trempealeau National Wildife Refuge, one of the best birdwatching destinations on the entire Mississippi River. An observation deck overlooking the wetlands offers great opportunities to view waterfowl and nesting terns.
